It was not until the end of the American Revolutionary War that the King's Bridge toll was abolished.
A New town was created in the area in 1846 by the division of Westchester. The new town was called West Farms, and by 1855, the town of Morrisania was created from it. The town of Kingsbridge was created in 1873 within the former borders of the town of Yonkers, which was almost corresponding to where we have the modern Bronx neighborhoods of Riverdale, Woodlawn Heights, and Kingsbridge.During the 19th and early 20th centuries, new settlers came to the area. Willa Cather, who was an author, Pierre Lorillard, who was a tobacco merchant, and Jordan L. Mott, an inventor who established Mott Haven, were the most famous settlers in the Bronx. The City of New York was consolidated on January 1, 1898, with the Bronx included as one of the five distinct boroughs. This moved the Bronx's territory into New York County from Westchester County. However, the consolidation of the Bronx into New York City happened in two stages.
